Hearts is an unusual card game: you don’t try to take tricks, you try not to take them!
Every Heart is worth a point, but the Black Lady — the Queen of Spades — is worth 13. And you don’t want to take points, you want to avoid them, because when anyone’s score reaches 100, the person with the lowest score wins. It’s the perfect game for a modest, self-effacing person from Minnesota, if you happen to know one.
You must follow suit when you can, but you never have to climb with a higher or lower card. Play anything in that suit. If you can’t follow suit, play anything you want. But watch out when someone runs out of a suit, because then the Hearts and the Black Lady come out.
If you have a really, really bad hand you can take all 26 points — and as a reward your score goes down by 26. This is called “shooting the moon,” and it’s rare, but so rewarding. You are really going to Heart this game.
